Lumpectomy and Small Breast Tumors

12.18.07 | No Comments

A study from the mayo clinic in Florida shows that small breast tumors need to be given more care than normal. Small breast tumors are often times overlooked as less significant if the breast tumor is less than one centimeter in size, however a breast tumor even of that size can still spread to the lymph nodes.

Lumpectomy is what is most common with women with these size of tumors. The type of treatment varies though. Some women with small breast tumors may choose to have full breast radiation treatment. The problem with small breast tumors is that there is no real guidelines on it because not much data exists.

Research from Mayo Clinic with the small breast tumors basically showed that a small percentage of women who were watched approximately 3 years from the point they were treated were found to have HER2-positive or triple-negative tumors becoming very aggressive. This means that women with this type of tumor no matter how small the breast tumor be, should be treated heavily as a normal larger tumor would. This makes it very important to have good health insurance. Cheap health insurance can be hard to find but will well be worth it, especially with something like this.

This study was beneficial to say the least, but tells us that no matter how insignificant a breast tumor may be in a women it is important to take it seriously.
